Take a trip to St Helena Island this September

How many time have you said to yourself: “I must get over to St Helena Island, I’ve been meaning to for ages!” But it’s tough, because there’s a lack of options right now about getting transport over. Well, The St Helena Island Community has a solution. Come with Belinda on a tour of her favourite place!

I’ve had so many people enquire about how to join on a tour, that I think it’s high time I make it happen. I’m excited, as showcasing the wonderful natural and cultural landscape at this place is one of the things I love doing most.

Not to mention that this is a great time to connect the amazing research on the social history of this unique island that The St Helena Island Community has been developing, to the prison ruins that remain on the island. Get ready to hear specific original facts and stories about the prisoners, warders and women and children the made up the St Helena Penal Settlement as well as the earlier Aboriginal, Dugong hunting and immigrant histories that also shaped this island.

This blog post is a first attempt to gather interest in the St Helena tour to ensure we can go ahead. As I don’t own my own boat, I am partnering with Brisbane Cruises to provide transport and then I will take my own separate tour once we reach St Helena Island. Please note, we will be walking up to the stockade and back, so you must be mobile enough to walk a few kilometers – there is no vehicle that can drive you!
